And this was slightly more open-ended, as there are branching paths. A lot of this is thanks to some walls you back blast through with the Drill Bomb.

The boss of this stage is the final confrontation against Dr. Cossack, himself, in his Cossack Catcher!
Just like the Square Machine, this Cossack Catcher is weak against Dust Crusher.
Despite this seemingly "final" boss, it doesn't seem as threatening as it wants to be. Why? Just defeat Cossack and then...

Suddenly, before Mega Man was able to finish Cossack off...
Proto Man suddenly showed up, and who was with him... a Russian blonde girl named Kalinka!
Kalinka urged Mega Man to not kill Cossack. Why? Because Cossack is her father!
Turns out that Dr. Wily was responsible for everything that transpired in this game. He kidnapped Kalinka, and forced Cossack to build 8 new Robot Masters, fight Mega Man and threaten the world if he ever wanted to see his daughter again. Thankfully, once Proto Man found this out, he rescued Kalinka himself while Mega Man was busy with Cossack.
Angered by this apparent "betrayal" by Proto Man, Wily himself finally stepped onto the stage to goad Mega Man into going after him once more!
Cossack was spared, Kalinka was safe, Proto Man's time in the game was over, but now Mega Man still had more work left to do!
