This game really is a step up in difficulty from the previous game. In particular, finding where the various pieces are hidden. The one thing they did do that was probably better was make sure every item had one heart piece and one other, either armor or subtank. No stage had both, no stage had neither. But they were also a lot harder to find, overall. It took me a while, but I managed to find and collect all of them, I did beat all three sub bosses while they were dancing about so I have Zero's pieces.
