Memory Lane Part 1: Touhou 6 Normal (1/2)
2Well, I had to do something with my spring break...
So I'm gonna use this time to run as much of the Touhou series as I can, in the order I originally played it - or at least as near as I can reconstruct. I wasn't exactly taking notes the first time through.
The runs will mostly be on normal, and probably mostly 1cc, but I make no promises about either of those. What I *can* promise is this: these runs will not be no-miss, they will not be no-bomb, they will not be no-focus, they won't be no-much of anything, except perhaps no-talent. :-P
That's because this series is less about me showing off and more, as the title indicates, a stroll down memory lane. This is Touhou as I learned it. And for that reason if nothing else, I invite anyone watching to share your own stories in the comments...or even record your own run and post it as a response.
That boilerplate out of the way, here's what I've got to say about Th06 in general. This was my first Touhou game. Back in the winter of '08, I found myself on vacation and, as usual for someone with my attention span, fairly bored with all the games I'd been playing. At the time, I didn't know much of anything about danmaku or bullet hell, and "doujin" was still roughly synonymous with "hentai" in my personal lexicon. I felt like trying something new out, and since it'd been a while since I played a shmup, I figured one of those would fit the bill. Having heard the name Touhou tossed around on message boards, I decided to dig up the earliest game in the series I could find and give it a shot.
If only I knew what I was getting into. I'd do it all over again, of course, but some warning would have been nice.
What I found was a game that was monstrously challenging. I had no idea what was going on plotwise, but the characters were all distinct and quirky, the dialog was funny even when it didn't translate very well, and the music was rather amazing. I was, naturally, hooked.
