11The theme for the event and exhibition was “Goddess: The Classical Mode” and this was the 6th time Anna Wintour was involved in a lead role. Her co-chairs in 2003 were Tom Ford and Nicole Kidman.
The event took a break in 2002 due to the 9/11 attacks and this might explain the subdued decor and outfits when compared to the utter lunacy that’s been on display in recent years.
But the event has also become far more exclusive and pricey: Tickets for the 2003 Gala cost $3500 dollars which is nothing compared to the $50 000 they reportedly cost in 2023…if you can even get a ticket…
Has the Met turned from a cool party into a desperate no holds barred fashion and attention arms race with people simply trying to make the biggest splash and loudest bang for their buck?
