Aron Ralstan was stuck, alone, in a canyon in Utah with limited supplies and no means of communication for five days before cutting off his own arm to free himself.

For the first few days he tried to chip away at the 800 pound boulder with a dull knife and later tried to lift the rock with a clever but futile system of ropes and pulleys made from his climbing gear.

On the fifth day, with his strength waning, he decided the time had come to take extreme action or die.

Making a tourniquet out of his climbing rope, he then broke the two bones in his forearm and cut through the soft tissue using his multi-tool’s pliers.

And remember this is all without any pain killers.

Now free but one handed and losing blood he repelled down a cliff and made it back to the trail, where he was found by three Dutch tourists, who helped him stagger down the path.

With time running out a search-and-rescue helicopter found him and he made it to hospital where he received life saving treatment.

His book recounting the ordeal became a bestseller and was the basis for the the film "127 hours" starring James Franco
