Directed by James Mangold, the spooky, paranoia fueled psychological thriller featured an ensemble cast that included John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Alfred Molina and the late Ray Liotta

The film received mixed reviews from critics but was a winner with audiences with many loving the horror movie elements and praising the movie’s two twists.

The movie's opening weekend grossed $16 million in the United States alone, debuting at #1 at the box office. The film continued to perform well in subsequent weeks, ultimately becoming one of the top-grossing films of 2003, earning over $90 million at the global box office.

Fun Fact:
The motel scenes were filmed on a giant soundstage at Sony Studios and this was the same soundstage used to film the Emerald City scenes in the Wizard of Oz. The rain effects also left cast and crew damp and cold for hours on end and apparently many came down with colds during filming.

Not So fun fact:
This was veteran supporting actor Frederick Coffin’s final role before his death. The actor earned a masters degree in theater and in 40 years in acting chalked up close to 70 film and TV roles. The somewhat aptly named Coffin, if you like puns at least, had chain smoked for decades and died aged 60 of Lung Cancer.
