Meta's Threads: Test Custom Tweetdeck-like Feeds

Meta's Threads is undergoing a transformation with the introduction of custom Tweetdeck-like feeds, allowing users to efficiently monitor multiple topics, searches, and accounts within a unified interface. As Meta begins testing this feature, users will have the ability to create "pinned columns" to track updates on specific subjects, tags, accounts, or search terms. These columns can be set to automatically refresh with new content, enhancing the real-time monitoring experience.

During the initial testing phase, Threads will support up to 100 different columns, although this number may be subject to adjustment as the test progresses, according to a Meta spokesperson. Screenshots shared by Mark Zuckerberg reveal that the new Threads columns closely resemble the layout of Tweetdeck, a desktop app popular among Twitter's power users, now rebranded as X Pro and exclusive to paid subscribers of X.

This test reflects Meta's efforts to elevate Threads as a reliable platform for accessing real-time information. In addition to the customizable feeds, Meta has also introduced a "recent" tab and trending topics to enhance search functionality. The ability to track multiple feeds simultaneously addresses concerns regarding Threads' algorithmic "for you" feed, which has been criticized for its unpredictable content mix and tendency to prioritize dated posts and unrelated personal anecdotes.

The scope of Meta's initial testing phase for this feature remains unclear, although Adam Mosseri has indicated that the company is seeking feedback on the changes. Meta has a history of gradually rolling out significant Threads updates to a limited group of users before wider implementation.

Update: As of May 16, 2024, Threads will support up to 100 columns, providing users with even greater flexibility in organizing and monitoring their content streams.
