OpenAI Reddit Deal: Training AI with Your Posts
OpenAI has inked a deal granting it access to real-time content via Reddit’s data API, allowing for the integration of Reddit discussions into ChatGPT and other forthcoming products. This mirrors Reddit’s previous agreement with Google, valued at $60 million, and enables the development of AI-driven features for Reddit users and moderators while leveraging OpenAI’s expansive language models.
Additionally, OpenAI has committed to becoming an advertising partner on Reddit, expanding its collaborative efforts with the platform. Despite the potential benefits of this partnership, Reddit’s community has historically expressed concerns over platform management decisions. Notably, in June 2023, over 7,000 subreddits staged protests in response to changes in API pricing.
This latest collaboration with OpenAI follows similar scrutiny. However, neither company has disclosed financial details or specifics regarding training data. Unlike the arrangement with Google, where Reddit explicitly stated its provision of “more efficient ways to train models,” this aspect remains unspecified. It's noteworthy that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's shareholding in Reddit has been acknowledged, with the partnership led by OpenAI's COO and approved by its independent Board of Directors.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman emphasizes the platform’s role as a vast repository of genuine and current human conversations, highlighting the decision to incorporate it into ChatGPT as a means of fostering connectivity and facilitating community discovery. Despite Reddit's historical stance against data scraping for AI training, exemplified by threats to block Google web crawlers, this partnership marks a significant shift, signaling a more collaborative approach between Reddit and AI entities like OpenAI.
