The story is set in the year 2033, in the aftermath of a global nuclear war that has devastated the Earth and rendered the surface uninhabitable due to radiation.
The survivors in Moscow have taken refuge in the city's underground metro system, creating a network of communities and stations to survive the harsh conditions above ground. The tunnels and stations of the metro have become the new home for the remaining population, but they are not free from dangers. Mutant creatures, hostile factions, and other challenges make survival a constant struggle.
The main character, Artyom, embarks on a perilous journey through the metro system to warn others of a mysterious threat that could endanger the last bastions of human civilization. The novel explores themes of survival, human nature, and the consequences of a nuclear apocalypse.
