Metroid 2: Return of Samus ALL BOSSES DEFEATED!
Its like Aliens but instead of Xenomorphs its Metroids.
This is the only 2D Metroid game I havent played till now. I played the remake on the 3DS, Samus Returns but never played the original. I considered getting it on the Game Boy Virtual Console but it never crossed my mind as I thought this game would be pointless to play after Samus Returns. Boy how wrong I was.
This could be bias because this was my first time playing, but this game is really good. A huge improvement over the first game on the NES in nearly every regard. The exploration is better and more atmospheric (still no map, but you can download one), the level design is good, there's more powerups and the bosses are sort of better. Overall a worthy sequel.
While playing the game, you can see certain elements that would become mainstays within the 2D Metroid games and Metroidvanias as a whole.
As for the problems I have with the game, the music is not the greatest. There are good tracks that set the tone perfectly like the beginning area and the endgame areas, but then theres some that sound like beeps and boops. I guess they wanted to do ambient music and while it does the job well, it leads to the music sounding a bit funny. The other issue I have is the Space Jump. The powerup makes you jump infinitely but the timing takes time to get used to and can get a bit frustrating at times. And the final one is that traversing can feel like a drag at times and some areas felt like filler. Not to many issues, but nothing too bad and are mostly subjective.
Now onto the bosses. Theyre not impressive, but theyre better than the ones on the NES. I liked the Omega Metroid and Queen Metroid fights.
