2Metroid Dread is an adventure game in which players control the bounty hunter Samus Aran exploring the planet ZDR. It retains the side-scrolling gameplay from previous Metroid games, as well as the possibility of free aiming and melee attacks added to Samus Returns (2017). Samus can also slide and cling to blue surfaces. Metroid Dread also adds stealth elements: Samus avoids EMMI's nearly indestructible robots by hiding, reducing her noise and using Phantom Cloak, a disguise that reduces her noise but slows down her movement. If the EMMI robot catches Samus, the player has a short chance to perform a melee counterattack and escape; if they fail, Samus will die.
