We definitely, absolutely, 100% needed this game to exist. It's not as good as Super Metroid, but this is an interesting situation. Normally, I just don't like games that continue a series but with an added gimmick. This, I feel, was very appropriate. They immediately showed with the X parasite mechanic that this was going to be a different game. And...it wasn't that different. Yet, it separated itself from Super Metroid to avoid the direct comparison. Nice move.

Slap the winning formula on a handheld, and you've got an instant classic. It's a shame we don't go back to the 2D well more often with Metroid and Zelda.
