I'm gonna go out on a limb here because, while I have a lot of gaming knowledge, I'm not a historian or encyclopedic about it...without reading anything about this, I'd say that this was a total game changer for arcade shooters. It's the first game that I can think of in the timeline that is definitively Capcom and it feels far more dynamic than any other shooter before it. For 1984, it just feels more like a shooter that's moving around, challenging you to be mobile and think quick rather than memorize samey patterns. It keeps it simple, but it keeps it moving and it really is about shot placement and mobility. Even the scoring system is based on accuracy, so it's practically telling you to pick your spots and make your shots count. I suppose my hated Xevious could have similar traits, but I felt much less freeform in that game than I did this one.

If there is one thing I cannot stand, however, it's that this game has an alarm whistle sound in the background. That stupid whistle has been copied into every port since no matter how awful the port can get it to sound. People kept looking at this game thinking that of all the things that would make their port authentic, that whistle needed to be there.
