This is the second to last game in the timeline, now that Metroid Dread is confirmed as Metroid 5, the sequel to Metroid Fusion.

The galaxy is at peace once again, and a new adventure awaits...

Some time after the events of Super Metroid, Samus was tasked as a bodyguard for the Biologic's Research Team to capture specimens from planet SR388. The team was evaluating the planet's ecosystem to see how much it had changed after the Metroids became extinct, but they had difficulty capturing specimens because the amount of wildlife on SR388 was lower than the last time Samus was there. The ecosystem of said planet was seemingly out of balance after the Metroids became extinct.

The Metroids were keeping something very dangerous in check, and their genocide was a huge mistake.
