Yeah, the developers changed a lot of things. Back in the old game, all you had to do was enter the area and kill all the Metroid before entering the next one. Here, it's the same, but you collect the Metroid's DNA to confirm its kill before filling up some Chozo Statue to confirm each kill. Oh, and you can teleport across areas, which is pretty neat for quick travels.
The major change I see is the map layout. It may hold some resemblance to the old games, but the rooms are entirely different, and you can access more secret areas. Too bad they didn't add those random holes you can enter and explore around, I didn't mind that curiosity.
