Metropolis Zone 2 (0:16) - Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2
This is a video of me completing Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Metropolis Zone 2 in a non-TAS speedrun of 0:16.
So, I basically put one of the hardest levels in the game to shame by utilizing one of the biggest - and weirdest - glitches in the game. You're probably thirsty for an explanation of what the hell just happened, but two things first:
1. Use of this glitchy path is totally legal.
2. This can and was done without any use of TAS technology (It is RTS from the Sega Smash Pack II).
Explanation:
1. The first thing done was that I had to jump on the lava in such a way, so that i falter back onto an adjacent sinking platform. Since I was currently flashing, I am given enough invincibility time to sink beneath the lava and avoid the harmful collision points.
2. The platform continues to take me far below beneath the floor. In order to get 16 seconds with Knuckles, as opposed to 17 with Sonic, I must jump as soon as the platform stops descending, and begin gliding at a precise point that will allow me direct passage into the right-most section of the wall. I stop gliding right before I hit the wall's right boundary, and land on a solid section, setting me up for the first glitch...
3. The first glitch is the one referred to as "zipping." Normal collision in this game works in that whenever Knuckles pushes into a wall, the game pushes back into Knuckles with an equal force, so as to not allow him passage inside the wall. But at this moment, Knuckles is already INSIDE the wall... and this can cause some crazy things to happen.
4. When you're inside a wall, the game thinks you're pushing really hard against it, but you're really not. Whenever you hit a collision point inside a wall, the game will force Knuckles with extreme thrust in the OPPOSITE direction you are telling him to go, because that is how the buggy wall physics works.
5. Once I am at this point, I tap the right button, so that I'm launched with a huge speed to the left, setting me up for the next major glitch...
6. The next glitch is called a level-wrap glitch. Basically, these last few levels are so huge that they cannot not fit into a Sega Genesis cartridge by itself. To make up for this, the programmers simply designed the level to "wrap" on top of itself. You can think of the level as being laid out on a long piece of paper, and folding the entire thing in half, making the left margin of the level completely adjacent to the right one.
7. In this case, since the two level margins are essentially adjacent, I am able to be thrust by the zipping glitch into the left margin so forcefully, that I end up at the right margin... on the other side of the map!
8. The camera tries to scroll as fast as it can to the other side of the map, but it's much too fast for some of the sprites to line up correctly, and the end-level post looks like a bunch of broken up spring sprites XD
Hopefully that explanation was good enough for you, and hopefully I touched up on everything as accurately as I could! Thanks for watching :)
