Just a note, I'm on 1.0 still. Maybe stuff got changed by 1.06, my PS4 doesn't have internet connection so I can't check.

0:05 - Optimal Sleeping Monster Stuff

The first hit you deal to a sleeping monster does triple damage. SnS usually wants to use Large/Mega Barrel Bombs or a charged backhop since those have the highest per hit damage. Now in old games, there was this thing called "Stylish Bombing" where you'd use Rising Slash (R2+Triangle) to detonate a bomb and time a roll to get through the explosions. This is still possible in MHW, however there's a significantly easier strategy and that is to mash a backstep input (Back+Circle) after rising slash. This is guaranteed to iframe the explosions and immediately get you a charged attack as the monster starts to wake up. I like this over the other strategies as it requires next to no timing, but the charged attack does miss if the bombs cause the monster to stagger backwards. The only thing to note is that, as with all bomb strategies, make sure your rising slash does not connect with the monster (my first one hits the pillar here, that's bad), abuse the large explosion.

1:25 - Item Usage

SnS' sheath time is really low in MHW, in fact it's nearly instant. This actually causes a weird interaction with the ability to use items with the weapon drawn. When you use potions with your weapon drawn, you cannot sprint and your only option to cancel the animation is to roll. However if you sheath before using the potion, you can sprint while using it. Additionally you can cancel your potion usage with a dash attack or a rising slash, almost as if you were in a normal unsheathed state. So in general, you'll probably want to sheath your weapon to heal instead of using items with your weapon drawn. Now the main advantage of SnS' ability to use items while unsheathed is the slinger, which you should still try and abuse.

2:38 - Jumping Rising Slash

It's commonly known that SnS can do ledge attacks up and down an ledge. It's also commonly known from the 4th generation titles that you can press heavy attack while climbing a ledge to get the same attack as if you dash attacked into it. Now the weird thing is that in MHW this command is still present, however Shield Bash (Direction + Circle) now has priority over Jumping Rising Slash (Circle while climbing a ledge). So in order to use the command, you have to release your control stick as you start the climbing animation.

3:05 - Backhop Charging

Probably the most mundane thing here. Charged backhop has no just frame or charge level, it does fixed damage as long as you get the jumping attack. There's a damage comparison in there somewhere which compares holding the charge until it automatically releases and instantly releasing it; it's the same. The absolute fastest release will actually not play the charging animation at all, so you won't hear the sparks that normally indicate you're charging. There's an example of this at 3:40.

4:45 - Reverse Backhop

This is the most useless and gimmicky part of this video. There is a new command to get backhop, which is heavy attack after a roll. This was not present in previous games, I checked this and the Shield Bash priority stuff with Guild Style on MHX. Now the important part here is that no directional input is required to get this backhop. So the weird thing starts when you input a direction during the window after a roll where Circle would get you a backhop. If you time the direction input + circle correctly, you can actually aim this backhop in any direction you want. This leads to some weird situations as you can see in the video. I've found no practical use for this, but it looks cool I guess.

Sorry for the lazy editing and clickbait title. I honestly haven't used Sony Vegas in years so I've forgotten most of the features. That and this really is just a bunch of random gimmicky SnS stuff I thought would be interesting to put up. No full guide, I honestly think SnS is a pretty self explanatory weapon and that getting good with SnS is more about getting good at Monster Hunter rather than at a specific weapon. So just play more, that builds up the fundamentals. There's no fancy weapon mechanics for me to explain unlike CB.
