MiG-19P Vs. MiG-15Bis (Take Two), A Generation Gap, Two Models Apart, DCS Dogfight
Take Two since the Ace AI in the preceding was flying straight when downed.
Some people doubt the value of older planes like the MiG-19P. Here, you can see its value going up against a much more agile MiG-15Bis. The MiG-15Bis is transonic. It can't go supersonic without departing controlled flight. The MiG-19P is the first Soviet plane capable of reaching supersonic controlled flight. It means while the MiG-19P is less agile, it can extend and dictate the engagement. It can dive nose down to gain excessive speed to help with turning much tighter at the expense of altitude since it can go supersonic in controlled flight (planes can only turn as tight as their lift capability allows and this is a factor of their wing shape and span and weight and thrust. By diving while turning, you give the wings the forward momentum they need to generate lift and therefore, you gain the ability to turn much tighter when diving while turning). The MiG-15Bis can't dive and turn to follow since it will depart controlled flight upon reaching a speed close to supersonic. Thus, although the MiG-15 is the more agile aircraft, it is only more agile in a level turn. The MiG-19 can extend the range, gain altitude, and then dictate the engagement on its own terms. By trading altitude for turn rate, the MiG-19 can outturn the MiG-15 which usually is low on energy from trying to follow the MiG-19 OR excessively too fast that it needs to slow down quite a bit to regain agility and this takes time, and it makes it a sitting duck as it can't turn in excessively high speed.
Some planes in DCS are much less desirable to most. The MiG-19P Farmer is one of those few. Many think it's a bad plane, but is it? It's OUT OF TIME. It has NO CONTEMPORARIES that are flyable on the American side. Sure, its air-to-air missile is first-gen, and it's likely to fail to track. Sure, it's far less agile than a fourth-gen fighter aircraft.
I flew the Farmer against an ace MiG-15Bis AI in DCS, and the Farmer just rocked. It has twin engines against the latter's single. It's supersonic against the latter's transonic speed (subsonic speed that can go to near-supersonic at the expense of stability or departure from controlled flight). It has two air-to-air missiles against the latter's none. They are a generation apart. The MiG-19 is a second-generation jet fighter aircraft while the MiG-15 is a first-generation jet fighter aircraft. They are also two models apart with the MiG-17 standing between them that improved upon the MiG-15's performance.
Bad and good are really relative terms. Compared with what?!
If you flew the Sabre or the MiG-15 Fagot in the Korean war, you would be a top dog. If you flew the Fagot in an air battle today, you would stand no chance.
I love the MiG-15Bis, and I think it's a capable fighter aircraft in DCS but in the MiG-19P, I can completely dominate the first. I dictate when I want to fight and how I want to fight. It cannot run from me either.
If you want to know just how bad or good the MiG-19 is, you need to also evaluate its nearest American contemporary, the F-100 Super Sabre. THERE IS A GOOD REASON WHY NO ONE BOTHERS TO MAKE an F-100 Super Sabre sim. IT SUCKS. Worse than the MiG-19. I don't think any DCS developer is going to make a Super Sabre module either.
