A playthrough of J.Y. Company's 1995 unlicensed beat 'em up for the Nintendo Famicom, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers III.

Played on difficulty level two as "Kinbealy," the pink ranger.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers III was one of the several bootleg NES carts produced by the infamous Taiwan-based Hummer Team, best known for their unsanctioned 8-bit conversions of popular 16-bit games like Street Fighter II (https://youtu.be/3dGBMGI43GA ), Aladdin (https://youtu.be/wbyVYFlgqi0 ), and Sonic the Hedgehog (https://youtu.be/DNRBcjhT2Wc ).

This time, they direct their attention to Bandai/Natsume's 1994 SNES action game Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (https://youtu.be/-7BRvTyhuNY ). This one doesn't stick quite as close to its source material as most of Hummer Team's games do, though.

It "borrows" most of its visual assets straight from the SNES game, so the character sprites and backgrounds look reasonably good despite how much animation and color was cut from them. The music is just as hideous as we've come to expect from the company's games, too. Overall, the presentation is right on par with Hummer Team's typical efforts.

The game doesn't have any of the SNES cart's cutscenes, but the most notable change is that the levels don't ever scroll farther than half-a-screen to the left or right. It's built on the same engine that powered the company's NES version of Street Fighter II, so you'll only ever fight one enemy at a time, and once you've finished the requisite number of baddies, the boss finally appears.

Being built on the framework of a 1v1 fighting game, the action feels *very* different from your standard belt-scrolling brawler, and each character has his (or her) own regular attack, jump attack, special move, and throw, though Kinbealy's range makes her the only decent option. The real secret to the game, though, is to exploit the bejeezus out of the AI. Either pin them down in the corner with projectiles or just wait for the enemy to jump on to the screen and throw them. Then throw them again. And again. And again. Until they are dead.

That's about all there is to it. And you know what? I was legitimately entertained by it for twenty minutes or so. The game sucks ass, no question, but I still found some fun here. Not a lot, but some. More than in the NES X-Men game, at least.
