Lethal Enforcers II: Gun Fighters (Sega CD) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Konami's 1994 light-gun shooter for the Sega CD, Lethal Enforcers II: Gun Fighters.
Played through on the normal difficulty level.
Following up on the Sega CD port of the original Lethal Enforcers (https://youtu.be/IZA9Cb7WsQg ) and the Genesis version of its sequel (https://youtu.be/JmORbn3f2YQ ), Lethal Enforcers II: Gun Fighters for the Sega CD was the final release for the series on 16-bit consoles.
This wild west-themed light gun shooter is essentially the same game as the first, but instead of lighting up the streets of 1990s Chicago, you blast your way through the wild American frontier of the 1870s. The mafia and the triads have been swapped with cowboys and indians, and the cars and helicopters have become steam trains and stagecoaches.
The new theme isn't quite as appealing as the the cityscapes of the original (at least, not in my opinion), but Gun Fighters does make the most of things with its new locations and setpieces. You'll have to blast a guy throwing explosive barrels at you from a wagon, explore a bank, saloon, and a mining site, and you even get to fight a hilariously stereotypical native shaman in the game's last battle.
The game play is as tight as it was in the first game, but it is much, much harder this time - bosses regular flood the screen with projectiles that you have to hit, and you have to carefully manage your ammo and when to reload to survive these fights. The last boss in particular is excruciating - he can chew through your credits like they were Pez without breaking a sweat. His death animation is awesome, though.
The Sega CD version is pretty much the same as the Genesis one, as was the case with the Sega versions of the first Lethal Enforcers. The graphics look the same - everything has been dithered and posterized to fit the system's tiny color palette, and a lot of detail is missing from the arcade game. It's ugly, but it's servicable.
The music is streamed from the CD and the digitized effects and voices are of higher quality, which is a *big* plus given how awful the audio was in the Genesis game. Everyone now speaks clearly, there's less distortion in the bang and boom effects, and the music is now actually worth listening to.
If you were a fan of Lethal Enforcers or Mad Dog McCree and can stomach the insane difficulty level, Lethal Enforcers II: Gun Fighters is worth checking out.
