Part 1 (Of 2)
In this video I point out a repeating meme that can be seen in many future / dystopian sci-fi TV & movie examples. What is often shown is a conflict between humanity & artificial intelligence / robotics & cyber / artificial life. If you look closer at some of the supporting story elements, there are often examples that show large scale engineering projects or a great mining effort that involve large machines burrowing into the Earth. Examples:
The Terminator (1984): In this story Kyle Reese is a human soldier sent back in time to stop a hunter / killer android (indistinguishable from a man). At around the 17 minute, 30 second mark, just prior to the flashback / dream sequence of Earth's fictional machine war future, Kyle hotwires a car as large machines work nearby. One appears to be lowering a larger earth boring drill or screw into the ground.
The Matrix Revolutions (2003): Here, artificial intelligence has conquered the Earth, imprisoning humanity, while some remnants have sought refuge deep below the surface. The machines construct a large drilling device to bore a hole down to the human stronghold, where an epic "last stand" type battle takes place.
