In this video I point out more repeating memes that can be seen in many future / dystopian sci-fi TV & movie examples. What is often shown is a conflict between humanity & artificial intelligence / robotics & cyber / artificial life. If you look closer at some of the supporting story elements, there are often examples that show large scale engineering projects or a great mining effort that involve large machines burrowing into the Earth. Examples:
2001 A Space Odyssey (1968): Stanley Kubrick & Arthur C. Clarke's groundbreaking science fiction film. The HAL 9000 supercomputer was the archetype for AI / robots run amuck more than a decade before such stroies would become common place. An example of excavation can be seen in this on the moon where the area around the alien Monolith is cleared out.
Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. (1966): Here, Doctor Who series adversaries, the Daleks (a kind of small alien mutant, empowered by robotic bodies / vehicles), besiege the U.K., turning the area around London into a mining zone. The inhabitants are brainwashed or forced into mining press-gangs.
Peter Cushing acted in several movies with related themes, including At The Earth' Core (1976), this one features a large drilling or boring machine that burrows deep into the Earth's crust.
Cushing was also in Star Wars (1977) and in this his character oversaw the physical destruction of the planet Alderaan. The heroes in the Millenium Falcon fly through the debris before landing on The Death Star. Many examples of cyber intelligence, robotics / AI in this.
