This is an analysis of a game that was never meant to be analysed. An accursed out of place artifact brought to you by the mad lads at Idea Factory, a developer infamous for their distinct flavour of 'shitty game'. Yaku: Yujo Dangi, or Misfortune: A Story of Suspicious Friendships (the English title given by its fan translation) is a 1996 PS1 game that in many ways feels ahead of its time; it has a subversive bite that I doubt its target audience was ready for at the time. It evokes the works of prolific horror mangaka Hideshi Hino with its ugly, almost inhuman characters, but it's hard to tell how much of this is by design or as a result of its poor graphics. Misfortune exists in a limbo where one can't be sure where intention ends and incompetence begins, and it takes full advantage of that fact to throw its players off balance in their search for answers... answers that may not even exist. In other words, it's a really bad game that I thought way too much about and decided to make it your problem too. Enjoy!
