The Fascinating and Bizarre Visual Novels of the 'Al|together Festival'
208This video is a deep dive on all thirty or so visual novels that were translated as part of an online festival that took place between 2005 and 2008. First of all, I must apologise that this video begins with an analysis of perhaps the most depressing visual novel of all time with Narcissu, but it's where our story begins! The translation effort on this excellent work of art led to the creation of Insani's altogether (stylised as 'al|together') festival, where a group of amateur translators would translate a VN in a single month. This history is more of an excuse for me to talk about some interesting visual novels though, truthfully. The 2000s was well and truly a golden age for the genre; doujin artists were creating all kinds of experimental works that used the medium to its full advantage. They weren't all well written, as you can see in the video, but even the bad ones paint a fascinating picture of the era they were made in.
