Mission 2: Fighter Planes Don't Float | Search n Rescue | 688 (I) Hunter/Killer | Retro
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Captain Chang Plays... 688 (I) Hunter/Killer
In the previous episode, we completed the first mission, where, Electronic Arts, acting as mission control, was in command of our retaliatory mission against Cuba and Cuban forces after an attack on Miami...
Single Mission 2: Fighter Planes Don't Float
MISSION: Flash traffic // Friendly F-15 went down in the Adriatic sea, and his wingmen reported seeing a parachute. Hostile frigate and submarine are believed to be in area. Prevent them from "rescuing" friendly pilot. Weapons release is authorized. Do NOT attack neutrals. Rescuing pilot is your top priority. Coordinates attached.
Sonar immediately picked up three contacts in the area: submarine, frigate, and neutral ship. Later we identified them as Heroj, Grisha, and cargo ship, respectively.
We headed toward the reported crash coordinates, but the sub is indeed in our way. When it broke 10 nm, we shot an ADCAP with a dogleg turn. The torpedo was able to sink the Heroj sub.
We continued toward the specified coordinates, and at first, we thought the frigate was leaving the scene, but then it turned back. When it broke 10 nm circle, we shot a torpedo toward it as well, with a dogleg. And after a long transit and pursuit, the frigate was sunk as well.
We approached the specified coordinates, but our scans showed... NOTHING.
We poked our radio antenna up and got an update... Our pilot is actually a bit further north... the first set of coordinates was wrong.
So we dove to 360 ft, and engaged 20 kt, toward the new spot.
Except we can't find anything there either. We scanned the sector through the periscope, through HF sonar... nothing.
Then someone pointed out, it's been hours since he went down. He could have drifted.
We stopped to poke up the radar mast... but it failed. Huh? (We were only doing 2 kt at the time)
We then tried active sonar, while pointing south. And sure enough, we got a contact to the southwest... over 6000 yards away.
We approached it at periscope depth, and indeed, that was him in a raft. In order not to turn over his raft with our bow wave, we approached slowly, but we managed to come alongside and surface only 100 ft from him, doing only 1 kt and coasting. He was quickly brought onboard and taken below to be checked over by Doc, our corpsman.
After one last sweep (the raft was scuttled with weights) we submerged, and transmitted the mission report to HQ.
Full 1000 points were awarded. Neither Herog nor Grisha ever detected us. So no penalties.
All right! We're ready for the next single mission...
