MiSTer FPGA - Testing an upcoming AO486 core that has CPU lvl2 cache support
The core for running DOS and Windows 95-98 on the MiSTER is called the AO486 core, and it works quite well, but it has the problem that its slow, and cannot even run Doom smoothly. That is about to be fixed with an update that adds CPU level 2 cache, and makes it possible switch between 15, 30, 55, 90 and 100mhz CPU speed.
It does have a problem with the audio, where it at 100mhz has trouble detecting FM card for music. It is solved by making it run at 30mhz, until you are in the game and the music is playing, then you can go to the MiSTer menu at switch it up to 100mhz.
In this video I am testing several games. Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and Magic, Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall, System Shock and they are all working, but I could not get Settlers 2, Quake or Death Rally to run as they require Super VGA, also called VESA support, which adds support for 640x480 with 256 colors and more. VGA supports up to 640x480 with 16 colors or 320x240 with 256 colors. The next MiSTer core might be getting VESA support as well though. Already someone shared a screenshot of Windows 95 running in 800x600 with I think it was 256 colors.
