Last time I played Diablo on the AO486 core it was the shareware version. But I found that the full version was not as simple to get running. It would often crash when using Daemon Tools to mount an ISO image of the Diablo CD for installing and playing the game. So to get around that there are two options. There is a no-CD patch that can be used, or there is the GOG version of Diablo which already has a no CD patch.

But copying the GOG version straight to a VHD and running it will not be enough, when Diablo is installed it adds a lot of registry keys. I have exported those keys though to make it easier to get this to work.

I suspect the only one that is needed is this:

It will set the Diablo installation to be D:\Diablo and the CD to be D:\Diablo as well. So if that is where you place the GOG version of Diablo it should be able to run. Except this wont make it work with the executable GOG uses for Diablo, but they kept the original executables for Diablo and Hellfire... and yes, Hellfire also works.
So the GOG version of Diablo installs itself to a Diablo folder.
In this folder there will be a dx and a hellfire folder. In the dx folder the original Diablo.exe is found and in the hellfire folder there is a hellfire exe. These both have no-cd patches courtesy of GOG or Blizzard when they made the GOG version.
If it wont run, you should maybe try the other reg files in this folder:

But maybe you lack a larger VHD to copy the game files to? I have set one up here:
http://dionysus.dk/software/DOS/8GB_Fat32.7z

Its an 8gb FAT32 formatted VHD that you can put game files on and such to be used with the AO486. Its empty right now except for being freshly formatted. Should also be possible to use it to install Windows on or whatever you might want to use an 8gb VHD for.
