Nearly one year after she vanished, human remains found in a Malibu Canyon, California, ravine have been identified as that of Mitrice Richardson. Richardson was 24-years-old when she disappeared on September 17, 2009, after being released from the Agoura Hills L-A County Sheriff's Department lockup in the middle of the night. Richardson had been arrested for being unable to pay for her meal at an upscale Malibu restaurant. According to CNN, "patrons at the restaurant said she exhibited strange behavior."

According to the ''Los Angeles Times,'' Richardson's remains were reportedly discovered in Malibu Canyon on August 9, 2010. Authorities confirmed on August 12, 2010, that the remains had been positively identified as Richardson's. The ''L-A Times'' says park rangers looking for marijuana plants discovered the skeletal remains in the ravine.

Richardson's family was notified of the discovery. Family member Rhonda Hampton told CNN she was "in shock," saying she was "always holding out hope" that Richardson would be found alive. Hampton added that "This is devastating, regardless of whether we believed she was in that canyon. You don't want that to be true, so there's a level of denial because that's what keeps you going."

Richardson's friends and family organized massive searches for her in the months after her disappearance. The last such organized volunteer search was held in June of 2010, just east of Malibu.

The family and attorneys of Richardson are questioning the sheriff's department for releasing her on foot in the middle of the night. Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca is quoted by MyFoxLA as saying that while deputies "acted properly," in the case, "properly doesn't mean we couldn't have done something more."
