Remember a time when Konami made video games? And they were of reputable high quality?
Suikoden (referred to as Gensou Suikoden in Japan) is a series of JRPGs that got its start on a super early PlayStation 1 in 1995. The original, and its related games therein, are based off of a Chinese novel known as The Water Margin, and you play as some dude bound by destiny as he has to gather 108 Stars of Destiny - comrades from all walks of life - to rise up under the banner they set and shape the course of history as a result. All because some spectral seer lady is lazy at her job of maintaining order every few decades.
It's basically Fire Emblem if it were a traditional JRPG instead of a Strategy RPG; there's lots of gathering allies, building up a home base, and battling in wars using all forms of strategy and what-have-you to win the day over corrupt jerks or otherwise suspect politics, royalty, empire, you name it. And it's good.
Suikoden has earned a solid rep by being fun and and engaging RPGs with heartfelt stories to tell, characters to love and hate, more quirks than an episode of My Hero Academia, and having hella amounts of feels at many points. Fans speak very favorably of these games, with the first and second being among the top more often than not, although the series has never been anything more than a cult classic. We always make the joke of "The Suikoden Chair" as it being a series that has no fans to support it, mainly because, well sadly, there /aren't/ a lot of fans who support it as much as we joke.
I got into the series about six years ago thanks to my good bro Lance(https://www.youtube.com/user/LancerD1984), who did an LP of the first Suikoden, and I was hooked right in. He's a real big fan and I could tell he had a lot of love for the series to share. A few years later, I would play Suikoden IV, the chronological first entry into the series, and its sequel spinoff Suikoden Tactics, on stream, and I uploaded a few highlights as I went. Suiko IV, generally regarded as the weakest entry, was definitely a very flawed game, but even it had that charm that kept me satisfied for more(which Suiko Tactics filled in nicely).
And now we come here.
Ron did me a solid and bought me a copy of this game for me to play as a fan of the series himself, and Suikoden V has been reported to be a game on par with Suikoden II, considered the series best outing. Now it's time to back under the banner of 108 all over again... Praise the Sun, indeed.
