"The fighters and their countless stories... came to an end as the light consumed them."

Hey, so Smash Ultimate is pretty great. Even if its single player content is still a wee bit lacking, the gameplay is as solid as anything else and I've gotten [plenty] of mileage out of the Spirit Board, one of the game's main attractions. As someone who loved Melee's Event Battles, the board makes me feel right at home. But ever since release, I avoided the other main attraction, the one that caught everyone's eyes as the game was nearing release - The World of Light.
A mighty force as appeared in the Smashverse with untold power, and the first thing it does is rout and capture nearly everyone and thing that has ever breathed in this realm of space. Even our noble heroes and villains stand no chance sgainst this Kirby-approved Eldritch Horror. Speaking of Kirby, bless him, he is the only one to escape the cataclysmic coralling, and it is up to him to recover the fallen denizens, save their essences, and rid the Smashverse of this terror once and for all.
Enter the World of Light, a mission-based game where you as the player travel a sizable world map and fight spirits of all sorts to tame them and use their power for yourself, at the same time working to free the other playable characters, one by one. You can learn new abilities via a skill tree by using points gained in battle to help better yourself against the rival spirits both feeble and ferocious.
As someone who's played a great deal of the Spirit Board this is quite addicting! Going from place to place to find new fighters and spirits to use is neat, plus there's no need to have platforming levels like in Subspace Emissary to pad the length of time between fights. (though I admit a few of those wouldn't hurt, Melee's Adventure Mode bore that much into my head!) And I get to fiddle with characters I seldom use for funsies, isn't that nice?
The light fades, but it can never truly disappear.
