MK8DX Custom Track - Towering Metropolis
Download: https://gamebanana.com/mods/607017
Race on top of and along the side of massive skyscrapers in this high octane anti-gravity race! This is a completely original track and any similarities to any Mario Kart World courses are purely coincidental (no really, this started development a month before the reveal trailer).
By default, this course replaces Toad Harbor, although I don't believe that there's anything preventing you from putting it over other courses. Note that this course does make use of a couple custom objects so other tracks may not be compatible (Wii Grumble Volcano is definitely an issue because it replaces the platform with the glide ramp).
==Known Issues==
There are a number of known issues with the track currently, but due to upcoming commitments I figured it would be a month before I could address them (if at all) so I figured I'd get it into people's hands sooner rather than later. These issues include...
Several Lakitu respawn points point slightly off on respawn. This is because of a bug I keep running into with track studio where it keeps randomly incorrectly rotating respawn points. I've patched them numerous times and they eventually just rebreak. I found out just as I was recording footage that two of the points rebroke slightly again (namely the top of the tallest skyscraper and one on the archway hairpin building), but they are roughly pointed in the correct direction so I've decided not to fight it for now.
Several distant textures flicker. This is due to some z fighting at a distance, but because of the way the model is constructed, the fix isn't easy and I fixed the worst cases of it, but I'm at a point where I'm tired of fiddling on the model and having to rebake lighting for something like this at the current time.
Smart Steering allows falling off in a couple select points. Not sure if the exact cause and it should work throughout the majority of the course, but I'll have to circle back and fix it at some point.
Several surfaces don't get shadows cast by players. I'm hoping the future material editor can help me take care of this as I'm limited to the in-game materials and the ones that had the reflective qualities I wanted did not allow shadows and it's a property I cannot edit.
Course feels a bit empty/needs more spectators. I had some performance issues due to the hefty size of the model and because of the open nature of the course, clipping out level geometry is tricky and I'm limited in how much I can do, so I didn't want to push it. It does hold stable as far as I can tell in 2 player splitscreen docked so I may slowly try to test the limits in a future update with more trackside spectators.
In spite of these issues, I hope you enjoy!
