MOANA 2 | Matangi Shot Progression | Animation Breakdowns

**Moana 2 Progression reel!!!**
I was fortunate to have not only animated on #moana2 but also to animate this really cool moment between Moana and Matangi in Matangi’s introduction sequence. Easily one of the more technically challenging shots I have ever done. It was a LOT of fun! @mikapikaart was the supervisor of Matangi and she did an excellent job at bringing her personality to life. I cannot thank the talented @maleriewalters enough for her superb reference and input for this shot.
Progression steps :
1. Final Animation in the film.
2. Reference stage : @maleriewalters and I spent nearly 3 hours in the reference room trying to play around with her personality. And she came up with so many fun takes, this is more or less where we landed.
3. Blocking : Once we had the Idea for reference locked down, I stepped blocked this out to show to directors and there were no major notes, except small adjustments for example, clearing matangi’s hands off her own face in screen space etc. The directors were happy with the performance pretty early on.
4. Animation - Polishing the blocking and really tracking the arcs and getting the characters fully on model.
5. Technical Animation - In my opinion this is where the shot really got a new life in terms of fluidity. @adamlevy08 did an amazing job with how matangi’s hair goes over Moana’s face and also choreographed her cape so it flows really nicely and looks pleasing to the eye.
6. Stage comparison.
