Modern? Retro? When Do Video Game Systems Become Retro?
We often talk about retro on this channel, but what exactly is retro? What classifies as being retro? When does a system go from current generation to retrogeneration? I've talked about this many times with other people, but I've never discussed my thoughts here on the channel.
There is really no right or wrong answer to this, a lot of it is personal opinion. Some people believe that once a system or a generation of hardware has a success or released the previous generation becomes retro. Some people consider it current generation until the software and hardware stops being sold by the original manufacturer.
Other people consider retro to be a standard of time measurement. As far as that goes, a system needs to be out of production and the games no longer produced for a number of years. But what is that time frame? Is it 5 years? Is it 10 years? Is it even longer? Is there no set time frame?
Not to sound flippant but for me the answer is fairly easy. Once a current generation of hardware has its successor released, I consider the previous generation of hardware to be retro. So for me, once the Nintendo Switch started shipping that meant the Wii u became retro. Once the PS5 started to ship, the PS4 and PS4 Pro became retro. And you guessed it, once the Xbox Series s and Series X hit store shelves, I then considered the Xbox One s, One X, and Xbox One to all be retro.
There is no cut and dry answer for this like I mentioned. There is no right or wrong answer either. It's all about opinion, and I would like to know what yours is. When does a system become retro in your opinion? Let me know in the comments.
