Nintendo Screwed Up the Super NES Jr For No Good Reason
As much as I love Nintendo and their systems, there are times when they make truly idiotic decisions when they develop hardware revisions. The AV Famicom was great because you didn't have to hook the system up via RF any longer. The ironic things is that there's no RF output on the AV Famicom! Nintendo also made similar odd choices when developing the Super Nintendo revision, and there are 3 major cost cutting changes they made which doesn't make a ton of sense. But then again, Nintendo's gonna Nintendo.
Elect Mechanism
While the standard system has an eject mechanism to help you remove the cartridges, the SNES Jr ditched this entirely. This had to be done as a cost cutting measure as it didn't save much in materials or assembly cost. I'm not sure if Nintendo saw this as unnecessary or polled users, but this was an odd omission.
Power LED
One of the weirdest things that they removed from the super NES on the Super Nintendo Jr was the power LED light. again this is something that doesn't require a whole lot of cost or assembly to install, but Nintendo removed it from the system. instead of having a power LED, there's an on-off indicator on the plastic on the top of the casing with notches on the power switch to indicate whether or not the system is on or not. thankfully, I've been using wireless controllers for a number of years so I know if the LED is on for the dongle then the system is powered on.
RGB Video Output
we're removing the eject mechanism and the power LED are both inconvenient, this one is kind of unforgivable. One of the best things about the original Super Nintendo was the fact that it can output beautiful RGB colors right out of the box. You can utilize HD Retrovision component video cables or Insurrection Industries SCART RGB cables. When they went from the standard Super Nintendo to the Super Nintendo Jr, however, they removed this functionality. The thing is it's still there, and the fact that you can install one of Voultar's excellent RGB mod boards onto your system to unlock the potential is even more frustrating.
Thiis is just another example of how Nintendo tends to remove some of the dumbest items when they make hardware revisions. What is your favorite and least favorite hardware revision Nintendo has ever done? Share your thoughts in the comments.
