Who Would Buy RoboCop 2 For Game Boy At Their First Gaming Convention?
One of the things that I enjoy most about going to video game conventions is meeting people that I've gotten to know online in person. Are great friend John Riggs has gathered a number of talented creators together, and me, we all help and support each other by providing input on video ideas, thumbnails, and more. One of the newest additions to the group is Retro Rob, and I was able to meet him in person for the very first time at the 2024 Midwest Gaming Classic. like I had asked many other creators, I wanted to know what the first gaming convention Rob attended was and if you got a game what was it. his answer surprised me quite a bit, I mean who goes to a video game convention for the very first time and picks Robocop 2 for the Game Boy? The answer? Retro Rob.

Rob's first convention was, not as I typed Classic Game CON in Austin, but Classic Game FEST in Austin. Yes, I'm tired, what can I say. The first game he picked up is a unique one in RoboCop 2 for the Game Boy. Developed and published by Ocean Software, it is, well, it truly is an Ocean game. Much like the versions for other platforms such as the NES or ZX Spectrum, Robocop 2 is about on par with the RoboCop 3 movie. Meaning it's a RoboCop Game, but nowhere near as good as it could be. It features 7 different levels you must try to save Old Detroit from the highly addictive drug, Nuke, just like in the movie. You'll battle street gangs who follow drug lord Cain, and in the end, you must fight the literal RoboCop 2.
Released in November of 1991, it wasn't received well by reviewers or gamers. Checking out Pricecharting, the oldest price they have dates back to April of 2008. In that time, the lowest price for a loose cartridge was $2.71, with the game topping out at $22.04. We didn't ask Rob what he paid, but he did indicate the price has dropped since he added it to his collection.
Have you ever played RoboCop 2 for the Game Boy? Have you ever gone to a gaming convention, and if so, what was it? Share your story in the comments!
