There are special quests and investigations where killing a monster is an automatic failure. Beat the snot out of a monster, wait for them to limp back to their nest and capture them from there. Or, if you are very familiar with a monster's movement, you can do so before they get to their nest. Seeing as how you're tasked to capturing a Kulu Ya-Ku, this one went about very fast.
