"Monster In My Room" by Rawin | Geometry Dash 2.11
1,028If you've watched the whole video, you know this is a pretty interesting level. Before playing it, I had only seen the first part on Twitter, so I was naturally pretty excited to see the rest when I heard it came out. Unfortunately, I was baited just like I may have baited you now too. The level pretty much ends after 20 seconds, and the rest is filler with some simple eyes and text, dragging it out to be 1 minute in total. It certainly subverts your expectations, but not in a good way. If more effort was put into the last 40 seconds, it could have worked better, but as it is now, I'd say it'd be better to leave it at 20 seconds.
Now, the reason I chose to upload this despite that is that it can make for some interesting discussion. How long should a level be to be rated? Is this too short? Of course, I wouldn't count anything past 20 seconds as worthy of a rate, so that's really all to consider. That part is really good both visually and gameplay-wise. It's fast-paced, but it's intuitive enough to play that it's enjoyable, and the designs and colors look nice and change fast to match the speed.
It's worth noting that the song is only 20 seconds, so it's not like Rawin could have chosen a better offset to make for a longer level. However, at that point I'd say you should just find another song. To answer my earlier question, I think it's good to require levels to reach a certain length of good quality parts to be eligible for a rate to keep it consistent. Right now, that seems to be around 30 seconds, but rates that short are rare and far between. To guarantee your level being rate-worthy in terms of length, you should go for at least 60 seconds, which this level does to be fair, but as I mentioned, I wouldn't count the last 40. In other words, I can't see this being rated as it is now. I'm excited to see what Rawin makes in the future, especially if it's to the same level as the first 20 seconds and not the last 40.
