Morning SAVERS Part 5: Reading - The Deep Learning That Transforms Kingdom Leadership
Top o' the Mornin' to Ya!
TLDR: Discover the transformative power of deep, thorough reading over quick content consumption. Learn why Kingdom Family Leaders need both daily Scripture reading and comprehensive nonfiction study to uncover the missing pieces that amplify your leadership, business, and calling in ways that surface-level learning cannot provide.
What?
Hey, top of the morning to you. What did you read last? What inspired you? What was your last piece of content that you read, and maybe even not content - what's something bigger and better and further beyond content that you read?
Years ago, I was like "I can solve anything on a computer." I'm a computer guy in my background and on some of my side projects. I can figure it out and find the bits and pieces and I can Google it, right? I know lots of it, and I can put the pieces together and plug them in.
But a couple years ago, I got a book. I used to get those 24-hour programming books when I was in my early twenties, mid-twenties, and they were awesome. I could get into a whole new area and in 24-hour lessons, I could be like a master of that subject, that topic. And it was cool, it was lovely.
And then I got good - I thought I was good. And then just a few years ago, I got a big book, like a 700-page book, and I started going through a technology that I had been using and doing really well and making things with it. And I realized, whoa, there were some bits and pieces that really took a lot of it to the next level.
Why?
This experience revealed something crucial about learning and growth: surface-level knowledge feels sufficient until you encounter deep, comprehensive learning. I thought I was good because I could Google solutions and piece things together, but the big book showed me there were foundational concepts and advanced techniques I'd been missing entirely.
So I know books are kind of old fashioned, but a full thorough book or course is the way to go. This principle applies not just to technical skills but to Kingdom leadership, business understanding, and spiritual growth.
Reading is today's topic for our morning savers: silence, affirmations, visualization, exercise, and reading. The difference between consuming quick content and doing deep reading is like the difference between snacking and having a nutritious meal.
Lesson
I like how this stacks up against 75 Hard - they say read 10 pages of nonfiction every day. For me as a Kingdom Family Leader, I read my scriptures every day. I do different patterns and systems for myself.
Right now I read - I got a new MacArthur Study Bible, and I read a chapter, and then I read the notes, and then I read the chapter again. And that really helps ingrain it in me and helps me learn about it.
One pattern I really enjoyed was I got a four-version parallel Bible, and I read all four versions each day. As I read each version, I was like "oh, that other version didn't say..." then I would go back and "Oh yeah, it did. It just didn't say it in the same way." So that really got the word of the Lord into my head.
I do read some fiction. I had a season where I didn't read any fiction at all, and that was good for growth and personal development. But I encourage you: read your Bible every day, do it as part of your morning savers. Read some nonfiction every day, even a little bit to grow and explore.
The key is reading the big book in your business, your industry, your vocation, your interest to really get all the missing pieces or the little pieces that really amplify whatever you're studying, learning, or doing.
Apply
What did you read last that truly inspired and challenged you? Write down in the Doobly Doo: What's one comprehensive book (not just articles or quick content) that could take your Kingdom leadership, business skills, or spiritual understanding to the next level?
Consider establishing a daily reading routine that includes:
Scripture reading with study notes or multiple translations
At least 10 pages of nonfiction in your field or area of growth
Occasionally, a comprehensive "big book" that goes deep into a subject you thought you knew
Identify the "missing pieces" in your current knowledge. Where have you been relying on quick Google searches or surface-level content when you really need the deep understanding that only comes from thorough study?
Choose one area where you've been getting by with fragmented knowledge and commit to reading a comprehensive book or taking a thorough course that will reveal what you've been missing.
You be blessed!
