From Doing to Receiving: Learning to Hear God in the Silence
Top o' the Mornin' to Ya!
TLDR: Discover the profound shift from constantly asking God "What should I do?" to learning how to receive in seasons of silence. Explore how stepping back from the pressure to achieve and create more might be exactly what God is calling you to, and practical ways to become receptive to His communication beyond audible voice.
What?
I've been praying lately, "God tell me what to do," and my ears don't work so good. He doesn't speak audibly to me (yet?). I was talking and reflecting with my wife recently and said, "I keep praying, tell me what to do. And there's like silence and no signs, no vision of changing or doing anything."
Then she said, "I remember when I was younger and I asked God what to do, and he said, 'Go live your life. I'll call you when I need you when it's time.'"
That was interesting for me because recently with my coach, he advised me that maybe this is a season of receiving instead of creating and doing more and more stuff. And that gave me a sense of peace. It gave me a breath of "okay, okay, everything's all right and I don't need to do or achieve or show or put out more."
Wow, it just came to me now - do I need to be doing less? Do I need to be cutting out the daily emails and daily YouTubes? The question is: what am I receiving and just really being open to hearing? Maybe that's where I need to change that prayer. Instead of "what do I do?" it's like "what do I receive and how do I receive in this season of receiving?"
Why?
This experience revealed something crucial about my relationship with God and how I approach Kingdom leadership: I was looking at it completely backwards. Instead of "What do I gotta do? What should I be doing? What's the best thing for me to do right now?" - which has been a mantra for me - it's like step back and receive.
God walks us along the path to the next thing. Sometimes that path involves active doing, but sometimes it involves active receiving. I've been notorious for creating the fleece and throwing out the fleece, thinking of the Urim and Thummim that the priests had in their breastplate to make choices and decisions.
But there's something beautiful about getting rid of the "supposed tos" and the "have tos." (Haftas) I don't have to constantly be producing, achieving, or creating more. There's freedom in recognizing that not every season requires intense action.
Lesson
The shift from doing to receiving represents a fundamental change in how we approach our relationship with God and our calling as Kingdom Family Leaders. Sometimes God's silence isn't absence - it's an invitation to receive rather than create.
What am I receiving? What are you receiving? How do we become receptive to that and be grateful and thankful and observant of the receiving? It's been a great season of pouring into Kingdom Family Leader, and that's been quite a blessing, quite a receiving.
The question changes from "What should I be doing?" to "What is God giving me right now? What am I meant to receive in this season?" This requires stepping back from the pressure to constantly produce and achieve, and instead becoming aware of what God is already providing.
This doesn't mean becoming passive or lazy. It means becoming actively receptive - grateful, thankful, and observant of what God is already doing in and around us. Sometimes the most important work happens when we stop trying to force outcomes and start paying attention to what's already being given.
Apply
How do you hear from God? That's the question for the Doobly Doo today. How do you receive that communication for yourself?
Consider whether you might be in a season of receiving rather than creating. What pressure are you putting on yourself to do more, achieve more, or produce more that might be preventing you from receiving what God wants to give you?
Write down: What are you currently receiving from God that you might be overlooking because you're focused on what you think you should be doing? How could you become more receptive and observant of God's current provision in your life?
Practice changing your prayer from "What should I do?" to "What are you giving me to receive right now?" Pay attention to what shifts when you approach God from a posture of receiving rather than requesting assignments.
You be blessed!
