Where Focus Goes, Energy Flows: Directing Your Daily Power for Kingdom Impact
Top o' the Mornin' to Ya!
TLDR: Learn how to energize yourself by asking the right questions and directing your focus intentionally. Discover why "How come I don't have energy?" drains you while "How do I get more energy?" creates solutions, and how to use daily goal-setting to align your focus with what you can control for maximum Kingdom Family Leader effectiveness.
What?
I'm building off yesterday's message about asking life-giving questions. This morning I caught myself asking "How come I don't have any energy?" - that's a horrible question to ask because it creates my mind thinking about all the ways that my energy's draining and why it's low. The real question, the good question is "How do I get more energy? How do I energize myself?"
Tony Robbins has a phrase that says "Where focus goes, energy flows." So when we put our focus on something, that is where our energy is going. If we put our focus on all the things we've gotta get done, all the have-tos, our energy's gonna flow to that scattered place. But if we prioritize and make a list and focus on those specific things, that's what gets done.
Every morning I write in my journal, and the last thing I write are three goals - one, two, or three goals that are gonna get done today that are the top priority, top of mind, that have my focus. On the right side I write a couple personal things that are like "if I get time and get to them, that would be wonderful." That keeps my energy flowing in the right places instead of being scattered and drained.
Why?
I share this because so many successful men feel exhausted not because they're doing too much, but because their focus is scattered across things they can't control. We're throwing energy into areas outside our circle of control - and that's just waste, trash, lost energy. When we're focusing on all the things outside our control, we drain ourselves without any return on investment.
The alignment of focus gives us energy in that focus. When we ask positive generating questions like "How do I get more energy? How do my kids succeed? How do I be a better father? How do I get to my goal weight?" we're directing our mental resources toward solutions and possibilities rather than problems and limitations.
Lesson
The principle of "where focus goes, energy flows" is about intentional stewardship of your mental and emotional resources. Your brain is designed to find evidence of whatever you're focusing on. If you focus on energy drains, you'll find more reasons to feel drained. If you focus on energy sources and solutions, you'll discover creative ways to energize yourself.
This isn't just time management - it's energy management. Every morning when you set your top three priorities, you're making a conscious choice about where your finite energy will be invested. It might even be better to set ONE priority. The key is distinguishing between what's in your circle of control versus what's outside it. Energy spent on things you can't control is energy wasted. Energy spent on your priorities and what you can influence creates momentum and results.
The daily practice of writing down your focus areas creates what psychologists call "implementation intention" - you're pre-deciding where your energy will go before the day's distractions pull you in multiple directions.
Apply
Tomorrow morning, before you check your phone or dive into your day, write down your number one area of focus where you want energy to go. Ask yourself "What is the number one area where I want my energy invested today?" Write that down along with two supporting priorities that align with this focus.
Throughout the day, when you catch your mind wandering to things outside your control or asking draining questions, redirect by asking "How do I energize this situation?" or "What's within my control here?" Notice how this simple redirect affects both your energy level and your results by the end of the day.
You be blessed!
