In 2023, NetherRealm Studios, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Games, released Mortal Kombat 1. This game marks the twelfth main installment in the Mortal Kombat series. It acts as both a sequel to Mortal Kombat 11 from 2019 and a second reboot of the series, following the release of Mortal Kombat in 2011. The game became available on various platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, with the premium edition hitting the shelves on September 14, five days before the standard edition's release on September 19.
Mortal Kombat 1 offers a range of gameplay modes, including a narrative-driven story mode, online multiplayer with rollback netcode, and offline play. A noteworthy addition is the "Kameo Fighters" feature, which allows players to enlist extra characters for assistance during fights, similar to the tag assist fighters in Mortal Kombat 11's Towers of Time mode. These characters are distinct from the main roster and must be selected before each fight. They can be called into battle to execute special moves or combos on opponents, and they also have their own Fatalities and Brutalities.
"Fatal Blows," first introduced in Mortal Kombat 11, make a return with a different twist. These powerful moves can only be triggered when a player's health falls below 30%. However, in this installment, they are executed as cooperative offensive maneuvers involving both the player and a kameo fighter, each delivering a synchronized attack. Additionally, the most impactful strike in the Fatal Blow showcases the X-ray effects last witnessed in Mortal Kombat X. The game also reintroduces the Air Kombat combo system, which was previously featured in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and the action-oriented spin-off, Shaolin Monks. It has been refined for this release.
Mortal Kombat 1 brings back the story-focused Story mode and the traditional Towers mode seen in prior games. It also introduces the seasonal "Invasion" mode, an online mode that blends fighting mechanics with elements of board games and role-playing. Players navigate a board, completing various challenges on each space they land on, earning rewards like skins, in-game currency, or concept art. Each Invasion season lasts roughly six weeks and features its own unique board and theme. In terms of multiplayer, the versus modes include Local mode for playing on the same console, Online mode for competing against opponents worldwide, and Tournament mode for hosting tournaments with standardized match rules.
