Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm (or Mortal Kombat: The Animated Series) was a cartoon that acted as an alternate sequel to the first Mortal Kombat movie. The series ran for one season of 13 episodes in 1995.

Being a Saturday morning cartoon, the violence was toned down considerably, but it's probably a bit more faithful than the Street Fighter cartoon. The series also marked the introduction of Quan Chi to the franchise.
