Mortal Shell (PC Open Beta) - Ryzen 5 3600 & GTX 1070 - FPS Test and Settings
Greetings, everybody.
Today we’re testing the open beta for Mortal Shell, a souls-like action RPG, on my usual Ryzen 5 3600 and GTX 1070.
My current PC specs are the following:
-CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (stock settings) with Coolermaster Hyper 212 Black RGB (w/2 fans, push-pull).
-Mobo: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC.
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and WHQL driver 451.48.
-RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT (2x8GB) CL16 DDR4@3200 Mhz.
-Storage: PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB NVMe (O.S.), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB.
-Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2 (Intake: 2x140 Front, 1x120 Lower Front - Exhaust: 1x140 Rear, 1x120 Top/VRM Area)
-PSU: Corsair RMx 650W 80+ Gold.
-O.S: Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz.
This beta (and possibly the game when it launches) is only available on the Epic Games Store, sadly, but well it is what it is.
The game offers a very decent amount of customization settings for things like UI, audio and stuff like that, which is nice to see on a game like this.
When it comes to Controls and Keybinds, it’s mostly fine except one important issue: the Arrow Keys don’t work as they should and instead they rotate the camera, while they should exactly work the same as WASD; the other issue is the fact that the movement keys aren’t even present on the keybinds menu, so we cannot remap them. WASD works, and in my case as I’m left handed, I need to externally remap the Arrow Keys to WASD (via Autohotkey) so I can actually try playing with mouse and keyboard. Not very good, but it’ s a beta after all, hopefully they improve this by release.
Now, don’t be that guy that tells others “omg you can’t play soulsborne games on keyboard and mouse, kek”, because you can, if the game is properly ported here on PC; I’ve completed games like Darksiders 3 on hard difficulty with KB & mouse, The Surge, etc. Baring minor issues, easily fixable in some cases, all perfect games when it comes to controls, both with gamepad and keyboard. It can be done, and if I can do it, being left handed, so can anyone else :P
Now, if the port sucks, of course it’s not possible (yeah, we remember the first Dark Souls PC port, yikes), and I believe Mortal Shell could be one of those games that could very well work nicely with mouse and keyboard. It also lacks a “walk slowly” keybind, I believe, so that’s another minor thing they could add or patch in, nothing impossible to do, TBH.
When it comes to graphics settings, we find the usual Unreal Engine 4 stuff here, and a slight disappointment here: some settings control various effects, and that’s a bad thing, because it makes tweaking stuff a lot more difficult. I don’t see any Ambient Occlusion setting, for example, and I’m pretty sure its quality it’s controlled by either the Post Process or the Effects setting. Yeah, I don’t like when games do this, and to name another one which similar settings, also on UE 4, Jedi Fallen Order did this, partially, and it could’ve been done a lot better there too.
Other than that, the game performs very well, quite smoothly on my system, with room to increase the Resolution Scale even a bit at decent settings and enough to play at stable 60 FPS. Hopefully they get enough feedback in this beta so the final release can be even better, as it looks like an interesting game in this genre, with nice art style and setting.
Here are some timestamps:
