Mafia II Classic PC - Ryzen 5 3600 & GTX 1070 - Revisiting and Benchmarking
Greetings, everyone.
Today we’re testing Mafia II, the old’ish game from 2010 indeed, just because I felt like it, how about that? Nah also because a remaster of the Mafia games has been announced, so I felt like re-visiting at least Mafia II for a little bit, to put things into perspective and all that.
My current PC specs are as follows:
-CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (stock settings) with Coolermaster Hyper 212 Black RGB.
-Mobo: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC.
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and WHQL driver 445.87.
-RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT (2x8GB) CL16 DDR4@3200 Mhz.
-Storage: PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB NVMe (O.S. and game), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB.
-Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2.
-PSU: Corsair RMx 650W 80+ Gold.
-O.S: Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz.
I would also revisit Mafia I, but I don’t own it at the moment, I had it on disc but I kind of lost it, it seems. Never bothered rebuying it digitally, it’s also the game that requires most fixes to make it not run crappy on recent systems so yeah, I’m kind of happy a proper remaster is coming this August, it seems, I have seen the screenshots and they’re looking quite good, TBH.
For Mafia II here, it has aged somewhat decently, it runs more than fine, with some minor judders here and there, probably due to being DX9 and not very optimized for modern multi-threaded CPUs, but it doesn’t run bad, that is until we try using Nvidia PhysX, yikes, now that has aged badly, due to poor driver support, basically only the drivers shipper with the game, from that era, are the good ones for these GPU based PhysX games, so I didn’t bother messing around with that.
The video as we can see is mostly me and my benchmark obsession, so I just ran some benches, highest settings, AA on-off (it’s super sampling), then 1440p, 4K, then also used Nvidia Profile Inspector to force 4xMSAA with 4x Sparse Grid Super-Sampling Anti-Aliasing, and HBAO+, because we can do that in most DX9 titles, yay, fun times. Looks blurry though, so maybe some ReShade with sharpening and the like would be good too.
Anyway, just a fun little video for a classic not-so-old game, maybe I should re-test some oldies now and then, it could be fun pushing 10 year old games to higher settings and make my GTX 1070 struggle, it’s possible and it’s fun. We’ll see, I hope this was interesting enough hopefully these Mafia games “remaster/makes” are good enough (the screenshots sure look mighty good, that’s for sure, we’ll see how they run…), and I’ll see you next time : )
