Mafia II: Definitive Edition PC - Ryzen 5 3600 & GTX 1070 - FPS Test and Settings
Greetings, everyone.
Welcome back once again to the world of Mafia II, in this case in the form of the Definitive Edition, which is basically the remastered version for the classic Mafia II game, which I made a video of a few days ago, actually.
My current PC specs are as follows:
-CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (stock settings) with Coolermaster Hyper 212 Black RGB.
-Mobo: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC.
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and WHQL driver 445.87.
-RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT (2x8GB) CL16 DDR4@3200 Mhz.
-Storage: PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB NVMe (O.S. & game), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB.
-Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2.
-PSU: Corsair RMx 650W 80+ Gold.
-O.S: Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz.
I wasn’t expecting this remaster this soon, as I thought the whole Mafia Trilogy was going to be released in August, and as it turns out, only Mafia I “remake” will be released then in August, as both Mafia II and III’s Definitive Editions are now out on Steam, and free for those who already owned any version of the games (with or without DLCs). Mafia II DE is a separate title, so don’t be fooled, like I was at first, by the 2 GB’ish update for Mafia II Classic, those are the extra DLC, now free. Mafia II DE is like 35 GBs in size, because of the new increased textures, mostly, I guess.
The game’s pretty similar to Classic in most of the menus, so not much to see there. We still have graphical presets from Low to High (Optimal seems similar to High, not sure what’s different).
PhysX is still quite buggy and messy, and in the benchmark it tanks my frame-rates to the 40s when set to High (which now has to be done via the Global Graphics preset, so High graphics equals to High APEX PhysX, and Medium makes PhysX lower to medium as well). They forgot to include an in game toggle for PhysX, so this is now the way to change it, either that or edit the “settings.xml” file.
In any case, there seem to be a lot of people indicating that the cloth physics for things like coats and jackets is completely missing, which is a shame, so definitely PhysX is, of course, being quite problematic here.
Here are some relevant timestamps anyway:
[MENUS & BENCHMARKS]
00:00 - Intro & General Menus (Audio etc.)
01:15 - Controls (Gamepad and Keyboard & Mouse)
03:18 - Video Settings
05:56 - 1080p Max Settings Benchmark (including 8xMSAA & High PhysX)
08:37 - Low Graphics Preset Benchmark (requires restart to disable PhysX)
10:22 - Medium Settings (Medium PhysX)
11:43 - High Settings (High PhysX)
12:46 - Custom Maxxed Settings with PhysX disabled (8xMSAA)
14:06 - 4xMSAA (MSAA performance impact testing)
14:48 - 2xMSAA
15:39 - MSAA disabled
16:30 - 1440p DSR Downsampling (MSAA & PhysX OFF)
17:28 - 1620p DSR
18:15 - 4K DSR
[IN GAME]
19:17 - HBAO performance/visual impact
20:27 - 1080p Max Settings uncapped FPS (no PhysX)
23:40 - Post Process AA (FXAA/SMAA) checking
24:54 - 1620p DSR Max Settings (reducing MSAA because it's not that needed now)
26:36 - 1620p DSR with 60 FPS cap
31:08 - 1080p Max uncapped FPS with Medium PhysX
33:01 - PhysX advice (how to disable, editing settings.xml, etc.)
All in all, I think this remaster could’ve added a few more things, maybe get rid of the bad PhysX implementation, and do it via CPU, simply because the cloth physics were awesome in the Classic version, and all that, but well we got this. Textures look decent, nothing super very high res, but still decent for a game like this, perhaps they could have added some more Texture Quality settings (or any, for that matter xD), but well, it is what it is, still Mafia II, now looking a bit better…shame about all these PhysX issues but the fact is that GPU accelerated PhysX have evolved nowadays to better implementations in games…this is legacy stuff today, so it was prone to issues, so here we are.
As usual, I hope this can be useful to any of you, and I’ll see you next time : )
