Mafia III: Definitive Edition PC - Ryzen 5 3600 & GTX 1070 - FPS Test and Settings
Greetings, everybody.
Today we’re back with some more Mafia testing, this time it’s the turn of Mafia III: Definitive Edition which, in essence, is the old Mafia III from 2016 with all the DLC bundled, that’s it, that’s what it is.
My current PC specs are the following:
-CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (stock settings) with Coolermaster Hyper 212 Black RGB (w/2 fans, push-pull).
-Mobo: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC.
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and WHQL driver 445.87.
-RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT (2x8GB) CL16 DDR4@3200 Mhz.
-Storage: PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB NVMe (O.S.), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB.
-Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2 (Intake: 2x140 Front, 1x120 Lower Front - Exhaust: 1x140 Rear, 1x120 Top/VRM Area )
-PSU: Corsair RMx 650W 80+ Gold.
-O.S: Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz.
This “Definitive Edition” of Mafia III doesn’t feel definitive in the slightest, especially not when it comes to the technical aspect of the game itself: I was very disappointed when I saw the same, the very exact same bugs present in the vanilla version of the game that launched back in 2016, almost 4 years ago.
I haven’t noticed any fixes applied to the game, how could I, when the first thing I notice is that the game is stuck at 60 Hz, when using Fullscreen mode, and has no Borderless option? That’s disappointment right there, pure gamer disappointment, Hangar 13, please don’t do a bad Mafia I Remake, don’t you dare, please.
As in the “vanilla” game, we have 3 main graphical presets, Low, Medium and High, with Optimal too being a mix of Medium and High, pretty useless really.
Controls are for the most part fine, except the fact that, once again, this game doesn’t allow me to use my mouse side buttons in Mouse 4, 5 format, and needed to remap them to other keyboard buttons.
But controls also have a serious issue: can’t use a gamepad and keyboard at the same time, well we can, but if the gamepad is plugged in, we get gamepad buttons only, and we cannot remap or access our keybinds if the gamepad is connected; likewise, if the gamepad isn’t connected, we cannot see the gamepad layouts , etc. Pretty poor design and flaw there, which I believe was present in the “original” game (gotta stop calling it that, it’s the same game anyway).
In any case, the game doesn’t run too bad per se, all things considered, it’s still quite GPU demanding though, and doing 1440p on my GTX 1070 doesn’t reach 60 FPS, not even close. It’s still possible to play at 1620p DSR and 30 FPS cap, but I clearly prefer 60 FPS.
Also, Low Textures (the only available option for them apart from High) looks absolutely atrocious, some would thing it has to be a glitch, but I don’t know, not sure about that, so we have to use High anyway.
Here are some relevant timestamps:
[MENUS & SETTINGS]
00:00 - Intro & General stuff (Audio, etc.)
01:15 - Control Settings (gamepad & keyboard/mouse don't go well together)
05:33 - Video Settings (needs FIX for Fullscreen at more than 60 Hz)
[IN GAME]
06:20 - Field of View (40, 65 & 90)
08:32 - Low Textures...bug? Or not.
11:39 - Low Preset
13:30 - Medium
14:53 - High
16:54 - "Optimal" preset
17:48 - 1440p DSR Downsampling
18:47 - 1620p DSR
20:07 - 4K DSR
20:58 - 1620p with 30 FPS in game limiter (better to use Rivatuner instead)
22:23 - 1080p High with 60 FPS cap
23:23 - Driving around at 60 FPS 1080p High
25:03 - Some Anti-Aliasing tips (High's too blurry, etc.)
26:36 - "Optimal" preset driving around (uncapped FPS)
28:10 - Back to High settings, 1080p uncapped FPS (gamepad driving)
And, as usual, I hope this can be useful to any of you, and I’ll see you next time : )
