Mount Moon (Jazz Cover) from Pokemon R/B/Y - dannymusic feat. insaneintherainmusic, Jacob, Colin
Mt. Moon, home of Zubat, Paras, Zubat, Clefairy, Zubat, Zubat, and ... Lord Helix?!
Mt. Moon was always a special location for me. It holds the distinction of being the first cave encountered in the Pokemon series. With many branching paths to travel down, ladders to climb, items to find, and Team Rocket members to fight, crossing Mt. Moon is not an easy walk. (Unless, of course, you enable the "walk through solid objects" Gameshark Code; in that case, it's a very easy ten-step walk to cut across the mountain and get into Cerulean City.)
** Huge thanks to guest performers Colin Williams on alto saxophone, Jacob Shoener on trumpet, and insaneintherainmusic on tenor sax! You guys rock! **
The last time Jake and Colin were on this channel was for my arrangement of Silph Co. in the insaneintherainmusic Jazz Challenge 2. I'm happy that they were able to come back again, this time with Mr. insaneintherainmusic himself! Musically, I wanted this track to follow the stylistic precedent that Silph Co. set! Both are very experimental and largely dissonant themes from the Gen 1 pokemon games. Mount Moon hits a lot of musical motives that I really like - parallel fourths, whole tone scales, and contrary chromatic motion to name a few things. Arranging one of my favorite Pokemon themes for big band and having both my friends from M&J Big Band and Carlos, the champion of jazz vgm, on board was truly a special experience I'm very grateful for.
