If it ain't broke. Always a pleasure to see an appreciation of emulating age in video games, that whether a title has 2023 graphics or 90s graphics, chances are you'll have fun all the same. And that is no different in retro Dead Space.
The demake emulates part of the first level in where Isaac has to find a way to repair a run down transit train for his surviving colleagues to make their way to the bridge of the USS Ishimura. Since the segment is quite brief with needing to make your way to only a few areas, the game lasts around 15-20 minutes.
Gameplay is very much attuned to the original with some limitations. With linear pathing, you will end up focusing on limbs of necromorphs, playing item management with only 2 types of pickups and the occasional stasis usage. It's not called a "demake" for nothing as the gameplay either leaves a lot to be desired or flat out does not have many other base mechanics from the modern versions.
The feel of the game with inspired retro graphics and immersion is what the demake prioritizes. The effectiveness in the ominous dread and uncertainty that lies before you in an abandoned space ship works quite well with highlighted pixelization. Dead Space cemented a lot of futuristic yet sinister themes when first released in 2008, to mimic that as an older game a decade prior is a pretty neat concept.
Retro horror shooty shooty, bang bang. What's not to love? Of course the attempt to showcase Dead Space as a title on an older platform is a bit rough around the edges but it's charming all the same. Definitely making me want to start up the classic and when I can, the remake, that's for sure.
