I've just finished playing or trying to play Amazon's new MMO, New World. It's the end of day 1 and there's pretty ridiculous server problems that limited my play time and has made the game completely unplayable for others, it really sucks. What I did get to play I kind of liked, with a few criticisms. The focus on crafting and gathering really scratches an itch I've been looking for in MMOs,` and I've had a glimpse into the player housing and world PVP which has got me excited. Hopefully we can get these server problems knocked out pretty quick.
So let's address the server issues first. Anyone who's played any MMORPG at launch knows to probably expect some server issues just from the sheer number of people trying to play at launch.
I made my character and that's when the server issues began, I sat in the queue for just over an hour and managed to get online. I was really lucky because it took friends about 7 hours to get in later on in the day. Once I got in, I didn't really experience any lag that affected gameplay, until later that night when I was fully disconnected and I had to re-join another queue to get back into the game. But what really surprised me is that each of New World's servers only allows 2000 people connected at once. Someone actually did the Maths, there's 174 servers, that's 348000 slots for players to play, but if you look at Steam, over 700,000 players were simultaneously trying to play at one point. So there isn't even enough space for over half of these players to play. I want to say that Amazon underestimated how many people would play, but they do have pre-order numbers. At least Amazon have stated they're working on this and they'll be offering free server transfers to everyone within 2 weeks.
When you get through the login queues, the Character Creator is quite basic, you'll only be able to play as humans, and there's quite limited options, there's a choice of body types but really it's just the choice between male and female which is a bit misleading. There's a few faces, you can pick your skin colour, hair styles and facial hair are decent with a few colour options but no highlights, eye colour, and a few basic facial additions like features, scars, and tattoos. Overall the character creator does the job but it doesn't leave the best first impression for the game, espically if you're really into your character customisation.
So when I did finally log into the game, I started washed ashore on the island of Aternum. You're shown some of the pretty nice visuals the world can offer before you're put with other players and cleaning up ghouls and shipwrecks.
You initially start with a sword and shield, and first impressions of the gameplay are pretty solid. With keyboard and mouse you can do a chunky 3 part combo attack with left click and block with your shield through right click. Blocking prevents damage but drains your endurance bar.
While doing a few fetch quests which involved killing a few enemies and retrieving some flags. I found a few rocks and wood from bushes and I used the crafting system to make some basic tools like a mining pick and logging axe. And I've gotta admit I kind of enjoyed just going around chopping down trees and mining veins.
Along my way to the next area I come across a side quest to gather some truffles, I use the opportunity to gather some more materials while I'm hunting truffles. This is where I also come across a bow, my preferred weapon of choice and requires you to actually aim and knock arrows, with headshots doing critical damage. I find an extra tough boar, almost a mini boss and it's a good test of the combat, you only have 3 ability slots which are tied to your weapon, which seems kind of low but you can swap between 2 weapons at will with no cooldown. Victory was extra satisfying with being able to skin your enemy afterwards, and I really like the way skinning works, there's almost a weight behind it as you slowly skin your prey.
I continue down the road and there's just campfires everywhere! There's a tutorial quest for players to setup a campfire and that explains why there's a mess of campfires. So I eventually come up to my first Hamlet, it feels pretty cosy and it's full of players. Some of these players are auto running into walls so they don't get kicked off the server for being afk and have to rejoin the login queues, which just looks stupid and kind of breaks the immersion a little.
