A big 8-hour session, minus a large intermission where I left the recording running while I texted people and ate food and stuff at []. I finish the tutorial and enter the game proper where I wander aimlessly and do a couple of shrines.
Then I find a big hole and it becomes the thing I want to fall into and survive, so I do some test runs, and the closest I could get to the ground from freefalling then clinging to a wall was just not close enough. I thought about the glowing bulb items I had a surplus of: if I could get them to proc on the floor, I'd have information to work with. So I made a structure out of a piece of ruins, two tree trunks and a barrel bomb, which was designed to cradle the bulbs as they fell along with me, then explode to activate them when I died from hitting the ground. The plan didn't pan out: the bulbs fell out despite the railings, the bomb didn't detonate, and I also survived just by jumping at the last second before impact, which was simple enough to gauge by the blue lights on the ground.
So there I was, surrounded in darkness, thinking "this might be the endgame castle place" and moving cautiously before realizing that this was all pretty tame and workable. enemies are a problem sure, but that's a result of having 3 armor and 4 hearts and not knowing how to partake of BotW combat, since I didn't play that. I explored for a while before attempting to get out by entering the ceiling of the root and climbing up. That wasn't a feature. How do I get out? Maybe some beacons are discount beacons and only light areas up while others let you out. Better keep exploring. Hours passed and I thought of it: maybe I can warp back to the surface? Yup that was the solution. Cool.
I originally thought that the highlight of the session would be the Shrine with the springs that took me so long to find a solution to, but it was wholly the massive Pokemon Diamond/Pearl Grand Underground that took the cake. It hit those spooky vibes with fog as darkness and difficult terrain to navigate in the dark, while being largely lacking in any real threats most of the time. It's just some frogs and Stalfos every once in a while, and maybe a Moblin camp or something? It's pretty empty, considering.
